Document Summary
Tolerance - diminished psychoactive effects after repeated use of a drug. Feeds addiction because users have to take increasing amounts of drug to get desired effect. Similar to conditioned response - body can be physically resistant to substances but it"s not necessarily persistent and can be context-dependent. Expectancy effects - when the body thinks it"s going to receive a certain drug (like a placebo) even if it doesn"t. Withdrawal - painful symptoms of the body readjusting to the absence of a drug. Worsens addiction because users want to resume taking the drug to end withdrawal symptoms. Tolerance - need to use more to receive desired effect. Withdrawal - distress experienced when high subsides. Time spent preoccupied with substance, obtaining it, and recovering. Depressants - chemicals that reduce neural activity and other body functions. Stimulants - drugs that intensify neural activity and bodily functions. Ex. caffeine, nicotine, amphetamines, methamphetamine, cocaine, ecstasy.
