Cognition- refers to mental activities and processes associated with thinking, knowing, remembering, includes reasoning, judgement and knowledge. Supports other psychological processes such as language and memory. Concept- mental grouping of similar objects, events, states, ideas and/or people. Can be communicated by an image of word. Prototype- mental images of the best example of a concept rather than a definition. When the boundary between concepts is fuzzy- examples contradict our prototypes. Problem solving- refers to the thinking we do in order to answer a complex question or to figure out how to resolve an unfavorable situation. Trial and error- tr(cid:455)i(cid:374)g (cid:448)arious possi(cid:271)le solutio(cid:374)s a(cid:374)d if the(cid:455) do(cid:374)"t (cid:449)ork tr(cid:455)i(cid:374)g others. Useful: perfecting an invention (ex: light bulb) Fails: when there is a clear solution but trial and error might miss it. Algorithm- is a step by step strategy for solving a problem, methodically leading to a specific solution- always correct.
