PSYC 1210 Lecture Notes - Lecture 8: Muscle Memory, Controllability
Document Summary
If you picture yourself acting/reacting a certain way, and believe that you will be able to behave that way, you"re more likely to be able to. Imagery tends to be most powerful mental technique. How you use it is what determines effectiveness. Most people do it, even if they don"t realize. Visualizing the execution of a skill from own vantage point. Visualizing yourself as if you were watching yourself on tv. Perspective less important than choosing most comfortable style. Psychoneuromuscular imagery programs the muscles for actions through mental stimulation/activation - similar to actual physical practice. Skier study skied down mountain while muscle movements were tracked, then visualized skiing down mountain and found that same muscles movements occurred. Symbolic learning understanding movement patterns - serves as mental blueprint of what to do. Visualize patterns that they need to see or do, which gets set in memory and can then perform when the situation arises.
