The mental part was hard initially when i first retired. Because it"s quick - cold turkey, the game"s gone then the physical stuff tries to catch up with you -joe montana. Little emphasis on helping them cope with retiring. Issues now only coming to light - little time spent with athletes after sport . Usoc created career assistance program for athletes - 1988. Nba/nfl recently began offering career counseling services. Retirement seen as a transition that takes place over a lifetime, not just at a singular moment. Focus should be on gradual alterations / changes as opposed to relinquishing / ending pursuits and goals. 1994 - the conceptual model of career transition was developed. Took into account both research and anecdotal findings to best explain the experience. Stage 2: factors related to adapting to career transitions. Single minded pursuit of excellence in sport can be dangerous psychologically and socially.
