Different methods of investigation can have an easier or more difficult time acquiring statistical data. Different methods of investigation have different amounts of validity or control. Ecological validity the extent to which the findings as a whole can be applied to the real world. Not just your population, but the whole idea. Case study - intensive investigation and observation of an individual. Pros: can be carried out over a long period of time, rapport with individual can help a researcher to get info, provide insight to a certain process. Cons: not representative of greater population, limits to what can be observed, researchers may become biased toward individual. Observational studies - observing the behaviors of individuals in natural setting. Pros: can involve many individuals of interest, avoids artificial situations that may be involved in experiments or case studies. Cons: only provides a description of behavior not an explanation, observers cannot direct behavior and are subject to outside events.
