Psychologists are skeptical of the notion that people have an inner true self . Self-construal: a way of thinking about the self. Independent self-construal: emphasizes what makes the self different and sets it apart from others. Interdependent self-construal: emphasizes what connects the self to other people and groups. A person"s culture can have an impact on their self-concept and self-expression. "i am" statements are reflective of the independent self. Goal of life is to enhance one"s individual self. Self-esteem is something that is stable (enduring across situations) Threats to one"s individual identity vs. threats to collective identity - someone is far more angry at the personal than if you threaten their group. Collectivism (asia, africa, central and south america) Power of personal control : if you don"t have it, you"re considered problematic.
