During preschool, children"s language skills reach a new height. There are significant gaps in comprehension and production. Children are receptive to language before they are expressive. Once they start expressing it, they make mistakes. Fast mapping: child"s association with a word after only a brief encounter. By age 6, the average child has a vocabulary of around 14,000 words. Preschoolers continue to use plurals and possessive forms of nouns. Grammar is the system of rules on how our thoughts can be expressed. 90% of what preschoolers present by the end of preschool is accurate. Pragmatics is the aspect of language relating to communicating effectively and appropriately with others. The average preschooler watches more than 21 hours of television a week. About 1/3 of households with children say their tv is on all day. The only spend about 45 minutes a day with a book. 70% of preschoolers between 4- 6 have used a computer.
