Great instability including major shifts in mood, an unstable self-image and impulsivity. People with bpd are prone to bouts of anger, which sometimes result in physical aggression and violence: often direct their impulsive anger inward and harm themselves. Date: 4/11/16: stress-related paranoid thinking or dissociative symptoms. Many of the patients who come to mental health ers are individuals with the disorder who have internationally hurt themselves. Their impulsive, self-destructive behavior can include: alcohol and substance abuse, reckless behavior, including driving and unsafe sex, self-injurious or self-mutilation behavior 75, suicidal actions and threat. 1. 5%-6% of population, 75% of women, 20% of inpatient population (primarily due to suicidality) Theories: lack of early acceptance or abuse/neglect by parents as well as a link to early sexual abuse, 70% report history of physical/sexual abuse. Overly reactive amygdala and underactive prefrontal cortex, and lower brain serotonin activity: genetics. Close relatives are 5x more likely than the general population.
