PSYC 3466 Lecture 11: 2/13/19
Document Summary
More people recalled words with a deep level of processing. Relationship between rate of forgetting and time in declarative memory. Consolidation: a physiological process involved in establishing long term memories. Synaptic consolidation: synapses are established and strengthened. Systems consolidation: memory representation migrates to the cortex. Forgetting can occur at different points in the consolidation process. Before systems consolidation, memories are vulnerable to subjective influences and inaccurate storage. Hippocampus highly activated when learning new information to form new memories. Proactive interference: disruption of memory from previous learning. Previously learned info can disrupt the use of new learned information. Retroactive interference: disruption of memory from learning during retention interval. Newly learned information can be remembered better than older information. Ex: most likely to remember material from the end of the semester than in the beginning of the semester. Ltm interference can be compared to the primacy and recency of effects in stm forgetting. Hyperthymesia: exceptional autobiographical memory (recalling information from daily life)
