Gender is not simply a system of classification, it also expresses the universal inequality. Chapter 1 between women and men: difference and dominance. Society differentiates people on the basis of gender and male dominance: tasks for men vs women are valued differently. Biological determinism vs differential socialization- nature vs nurture: biologically different. Sex is male and female, gender is masculinity and femininity: gender varies cross-culturally and varies enormously, differences between two cultures is often greater than the differences between the two genders. Differential socialization- men and women are different because taught to be, not necessarily born different- political ideas and views imposed on. Both schools of thought think men and female differ- interplanetary theory of gender: think difference causes domination. Gender difference is the chief outcome of gender inequality, because it is through the idea of difference that inequality is legitimated: the very creation of difference is the foundation on which inequality rests.
