Document Summary

Skin in the game: toward a theorization of whiteness. Pedagogical strategies cannot entirely transcend the way in which our bodies and exposed identities are responded to in the classroom. Skin in the game is a way of theorizing whiteness and the complex ways it unfolds in the classroom. Acknowledge the rewards and risks of investment in social justice. It is not uncommon for those in positions of privilege to face anxiety when trying to identify with aggressive literatures and experiences. Once the unstable foundations of whiteness are recognized, a new and visible white identity grounded in antiracist alliances with people of color can be forged. Reflective identification: allows reader to access an imagined world that resembles er own. The reader"s worldview, values and personhood are legitimated through the text. This can be dangerous for those whose worldview aligns with the dominant gaze, and reflective identification will produce retrenchment, not growth.
