Three types of causes of mental illnesses: necessary (eg: a traumaic experience for ptsd), Suicient (condiion x implies illness y, but a illness y does not necessary result from condiion. Timing of causes of mental illnesses: distal (long before onset of disease), proximal (close to ime of disorder), reinforcing (a cause that persists as a symptom) Diathesis is a predisposiion to developing a mental disorder, stressor is the precipitaing or trigger factor. Addiive models posit that a combinaion of disposiion and stress cause disorder once the linear combinaion has reached a threshold level (either stress or disposiion are suicient to cause onset of an illness) Interacive model: some of both disposiion and trigger are necessary, non-linear in terms of contribuion to mental illness; model its beter for most illnesses. Caspi et al. (2003), efects of stressors depend on serotonin transporter allele. Protecive factors: funcional opposite of diathesis, increase resiliency (high iq, self-esteem, geneics, temperament), biological, psychological and sociological factors.
