Emotions are shown through body language and facial expressions. Similarities in ability to differentiate facial expressions of emotions. Zygote : one-celled organism formed by union of sperm and egg. Growing child actually begins to develop in critical ways. Germinal phase : first 2 weeks after conception. Embryonic phase : next 6 weeks (2 months) - begins to form and function. Genetic and environmental factors influence our development. Placenta : transfers nutrients and oxygen from mother to fetus. Teratogens : harmful agents that can hinder development. Eg: babies roll over before able to sit or crawl before walking. When raised w/ both- monkeys cling to cloth mother when anxious and used her as a secure base. Babies pre-programmed (innately) to behave in a manner that will trigger protective, loving response from adults. Adults programmed to respond to these behaviors with love, warmth and protection.
