Document Summary
Begin by formulating a hypothesis where a theory needs to be translated into something that can be tested, a theory is a system of interrelated ideas used to explain some set of observations. Hypothesis-testable prediction that is often implied by the theory. Operational definition-statement of the procedure used to define research variables (ex: when testing hours of sleep vs anxiety, you have to specify what kind of anxiety like clinical anxiety?) After formulating a hypothesis, you have to design the study. Afterwards, you will collect the data with surveys, questionnaires, experimental manipulations, observations depending on the research question you"re asking. Then you will need to analyze your data where it is usually statistical in nature, but sometimes you will get qualitative data which is descriptive in nature. Based on analyses, conclusion will be drawn whether your hypothesis is supported. Correlations do not indicate causation (ex: increase in polio diagnosis vs increase in ice cream sales example)
