Architects: anthemins of tralles + isidorus of miletus. Examples are sant appolinare in ravenna and san vitale. Flying buttresses-flying arches combined with tower buttresses -allowed for construction of self-supporting skeletal structure -permitted huge window walls of stained glass. Rose window-huge round window-huge, circular, stained glass window, usually with petal shaped glass pieces. Transept- areas at the sides of the nave that makes the arms of the cross. Abbot suger-father of gothic art-gothic art emerged in 1140 when suger started to enlarge and redesign his small church: gothic vocabulary. Gargoyle- statues/sculptures of grotesque figures; demons-function: to ward off evil- rainspouts-possibly meant chance for artistic freedom for architects-usually can"t be since they are so high up.
