Bms 1004 intro to cell and molecular biology recitation. Homunculus-thought to be the origin of life where it eats an egg. 4 main macromolecules = nucleic acids, protein, lipid, carbohydrates. Carbohydrates-made up of sugar and starches, not salt. Prion-misfolded proteins with domino effect, target neurons, mainly responsible for mad cow disease (bovine spongiform encephalitis) Kaposi"s sarcoma (skin cancer with purple skin lesions) and flu-like symptoms. Cervical cancer (obligate-cannot live on its own, intracellular-within cell, parasite-uses a host) When viruses attack by first attaching to cell membrane to inject proteins, then they take over the machinery inside (including enzymes, dna, ribosomes) to produce proteins. Antibiotics-kills all bacteria, no matter if it"s good or bad, most bacteria in our body are found in our digestive tract, recommended by doctors to take yogurts because it contains probiotics which helps restore good gut bacteria. Homeostasis-living cells and organisms regulate their cells and bodies to maintain relatively stable internal condition.
