Milman parry: between 1933 and 1935 parry, at the time associate professor at harvard. University, made two trips to yugoslavia, where he studied and recorded oral traditional poetry in serbo-croat with the help of his assistant albert. The muse choses to start the story in the middles of things. First 4 books have nothing to do with odysseus: set up the scene, penelope has an important role, the telemachiad , odysseus"s son, telemachus. Books 5 12: odysseus in phaeacia, odysseus with calypso. Books 9 12: odysseus recounts his story from the fall of troy to calypso. Odysseus explaining how he thought up a scheme for escaping from the cyclops: I wove a web of every guile and wile. Matters of style: long, rhetorically rich speeches, descriptions, similes, digressions: tying a knot in time. Liminal: on the threshold , between life and death, between dreaming and waking, between childhood and adulthood, between natural and supernatural realms.
