Document Summary

When raymond carver wrote the story, a small, good thing, he knew it would have a great impact on the world. The story is about how a baker lifts the grief of a family that has lost an important figure. This important figure was the son of ann weiss, scotty. When he died, she entered depression making her emotions dark. However, when she got repeat calls from a baker asking for why they forgot scotty"s cake, her depression turned to hatred. When she meets the baker next, he offers her hot rolls and bread as a plea for forgiveness. Once she ate these, the darkness over her heart lifts and she feels better. As it seems, when darkness envelops the heart, a small, good thing, such as the bread of the baker, may be the only hope to brighten it. The darkness that envelops ann"s heart is the death of her son, scotty.
