Indentured servitude is men and women working under a master over a fixed period of time. The amount of time varies to around four to five years. If a european accepted this, he/she would receive a passage to america, some food and a shelter. After completing their service, the indentured servants were supposed to receive clothing, tools and land, but many of the masters didn"t provide it. This lead too many of the servants not having a way to live by themselves. The significance of the indentured servants is at the time it was beneficial since, it would be hard to make the native americans into a stable work force. With the headright system implemented, it made masters accumulate more land for each servant he imports. However, the problems with this system were that it left men without employment and family. During the eighteenth century indentured servitude was declining and the it gave rise to african slavery: middle passage.
