They thought of a theory where the individual knows the difference between the reason and understanding. Understanding was the use of the intellect and things that are done by the majority. Understanding is something that hinders instinct and it is the learning that the society gives to a person. That is why the transcend lists goal is free themselves from understanding and put themselves into reason. Reason is the ability to understand the truth by instincts and emotions. This was the highest way of thinking for a person, and people should transcend their limits of the intellect and allow emotions create a relation to the universe: henry david thoreau. Henry thoreau was a transcendentalist who supported that the people had to think about themselves. He wanted to people not to conform to the views of society.
