Have moments of melodrama - usually involved in the serial storylines. First really popular prime time soap opera. Initially used as a way to extend broadcast television. Studios were in discussion to have their own cable delivery service to bring their movies to audiences without needing broadcast networks. Broadcast networks appeal to the fcc to see how cable will be used. Wanted it to only be a delivery service. 1972 - fcc"s report & order on cable television. Only 10% have cable at time of report. Sidestepping the issue of how it"s going to be used as competition. Should be in place must carry rules. Cable should have all local broadcasts on its system. Satellites opened up a system of distribution. Could use satellite to broadcast unlimited number of channels. A single company can own up to 8 in large markets & 5 in smaller markets. Allows telephone companies to provide cable services.
