Queer theory has a family- we can think of it as the child of three parents: feminist criticism, gender studies, and the early lgb movement. Tries to correct the mistakes of its parents: the essentializing tendency of feminism (in order to fight for women"s rights, you must define woman ) the devolution of identity politics into new regulatory regimes. While valuing the power of identity politics to overcome social hierarchies and oppression of subaltern groups, queer theorists try to avoid the pitfalls of political correctness, essentialism, and new hierarchies of social identity. Queer" is a term that is, therefore, kept intentionally open; it refers to anything that destabilizes norms of gender and/or sexuality.
