Imagined communities (b. anderson) capitalism brought print media into being. you can connect with people across the country because of same language. Different from lived community where you see people, imagined community you may never see anyone. Based on marxist school of thought. instead of hard science he is writing a form of analysis to apply to societies in terms of politics etc. Hegemony - power to keep one group"s interests as natural in society. Example is the popularization of the idea of slavery. Break hegemony for alternative ideas and forms of society. Cultural studies takes off in the 80s: political economy ~ conditions of production, circulation, and consumption of media.
