Media culture & the triumph of the spectacle - kellner. Developed a critical theory that is aimed at change and emancipation through enlightenment but is not ideological. Popular culture is a form of brainwashing - it presents to the masses the ideas, values & priorities of the ruling class. How media culture has become dominated by the forms of spectacle and mega- spectacle (what we later call the mediathon). Counter-movements and alternative cultural expressions in the name of a democratic society. Political and social life is shaped more and more by media spectacle. Social and political conflicts are increasingly played out on the screens of media culture, which display spectacles like sensational murder cases, terrorist bombings, celebrity and political sex scandals, and the explosive violence of everyday life (1) 2 ideas from debord"s (and kellner) society of the spectacle. The spectacle presents itself simultaneously as all of society, as part of society, and as an instrument of unification.
