Ninety-five percent of u. s adults support organ donation yet only fifty-four percent are actually signed up as donors. Currently there are more than 114,000 men, women and children on the national transplant waiting list (u. s. department of health and human services, 2018). This number grows each year while the number of donors and transplants fails to experience proportionate growth, and as a result, twenty people die everyday waiting for an organ transplant (u. s. department of health and human services, 2018). In the us, there are two ways to become a registered organ donor. An individual may either apply when updating a driver"s license or state id card, or by registering online through the government website. When registering at the department of motor vehicles, applicants are offered a pamphlet briefly describing what organ donation is and how one donor can save up to eight lives (organ donor, 2018).
