Lecture 7: ideological responses to new political concepts. Social reform/political justice: why has the government been unable to achieve. Calls for the creation of cultural and political organizations. Arab nationalism did this through culture and literary production. Called for pan-arabism - unification of arab states. Briefly created arab league (1945), which failed within a few years. Suggested christians should read qu"ran as a literary text (and vice versa with bible) Romanticized the past to create new modern. This is when the word arab became a descriptor of the people we currently think of as arabs. Didn"t like religious figures and feudalists and communists.
