Undergoes rapid rise starting in the 1940"s and 1950"s as it replaces wood and coal. In part, this shift is due to suburban living and consumer culture. The oil consumption plateaus briefly during 1920"s and 1980"s due to price shock. Consumption increases again afterwards, especially due to industrialization of east. The world still gets most of its oil from the middle east today. Five countries in the middle east have over 50% of the world"s oil reserves. This is due to geological phenomena, not anything else. The largest oil consumers are not the largest oil producers. 1990 - the us starts to import more oil than it produces. Us global power is based in cheap oil. Oil was used to get european countries off of coal. This is because coal production is labor intensive and coal miners were very well organized and socialists.
