We have a larger frontal cortex than most animals, which is what might make us smarter than other animals consciousness: the things or concepts that you are aware of; own module, but can exert control over others. Have different modules that can help us formulate a whole idea. Freud: first to say our mind can be divided into consciousness and unconsciousness (ie. id/ego/superego) Unconsciousness: animalistic drives that need to be suppressed (sex/aggression etc) We spend a lot of time zoning out. Our conscious mind is too slow, so we use our unconscious a lot more. Claparede pricked patient"s hand, and the next time patient met, didn"t want to shake. Pattern detection: able to sense a pattern, but you can"t articulate the rhyme or reason. Unconscious filtering: ie. cocktail party phenomenon can hear your name in a large crowd.
