Loyalty: in order for loyalty to work, there must be trustworthiness. Confucius was not a believer in class status. Confucian text: no principles for everyday conduct, but rather rituals that guide people to right action, which guides people. Learning widely in culture and keeping within bounds of ritual. In order to have self correction, you need good friends. Wrongs one finds is the wrongs they find within themselves. We are inherently good, and evil is perversion of that good nature. Mysticism: deep understanding of religion, being with god, unity with the ultimate being. Francis was a mystic, he loved animals, and could communicate with them. Mother teresa was connected with the poor and sick. Modernity has a focus on the individual rather than the idea of the whole which was what mysticism was more focused on the whole. All the natural things have to be purified in the kabbalah, mystics want to revitalize nature myths.
