Originating from the latin word articulus (meaning joint), the articular system refers to the connections between components of the skeletal system. Arthron (meaning joint), arthrology is defined as the study of joints. Arthritis is defined as the inflammation of joints. (the suffix itis means inflammation. ) Common forms of arthritis include gouty arthritis, osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis. All forms of arthritis include the same symptoms of pain, swelling of the joint and joint stiffness. Gouty arthritis (gout) is caused by the excess buildup of uric acid crystals (a cellular waste product) in synovial fluid and in synovial membranes. Osteoarthritis is a chronic degenerative condition which is most prevalent in weight bearing joints. Osteoarthritis begins with the wearing away of articular cartilage which causes bone on bone contact resulting in abrasions on the bones surface. Rheumatoid arthritis (ra) is an autoimmune disorder that usually affects younger to middle aged individuals and is more prevalent in women.
