Document Summary

Name of the cation + the name of the anion. Ionic compounds are electrically neutral sum (+) ions= sum (-) ions. If you can factor out a number from both subscripts, then you must do so. Prefixes: tell # of atoms of each element. First element listed only has one we leave off mono. If hydrogen is the first element then no prefix. Full name first element + stem + ide for 2nd element + prefixes. *when 2 o"s come together drop 1 of the vowels. *acids are ions that have become electrically neutral by adding h+. Oxyacids: oxygen + non oxygen element + hydrogen. By adding # h"s equal to the charge of the ion. Ending of ion tells you the ending for acid. Hydrates- have h2o molecules as part of the crystal structure. Formula mass- the sum of atomic masses for each atom of each element in the chemical formula. Molar mass- same as atomic mass molar mass.
