Part i: chapter 2 notes continued from january 17th. Administrative and staff support in the federal judiciary. Can hear both civil and criminal cases but they cannot give a sentence. Assist judges, depending on the level of court gets 2-5 clerks. Judicial law clerks are assigned to the judge. Helps with cases for those who do not have representation ( pro-se. Federal judicial center provides training and research for the federal judiciary filings ) May serve 1-2 years depending on the judge. Does statistical research on case loads, etc. 2% of cases are heard by federal courts. No two states have exactly similar court systems. Each state adopts and creates its own court system. Creates as many courts as it wishes. County seat: where county court and the government is located. Example : in oakland county, the seat is in pontiac. Industrial revolution and growth in urban areas. New york has never been through a unification of courts.
