PSY 100 Lecture 2: Chapter 2
Document Summary
A network of cells that carries info to and from all parts of the body. Neuroscience the branch of life sciences that deals with the structure and function of the brain and neurons, nerves and nervous tissue that form the nervous system. Biological psychology/behavioral neuroscience the branch of neuroscience that focuses on the biological bases of psychological p(cid:396)o(cid:272)esses, (cid:271)eha(cid:448)io(cid:396) a(cid:374)d lea(cid:396)(cid:374)i(cid:374)g, a(cid:374)d it"s the p(cid:396)i(cid:373)a(cid:396)y a(cid:396)ea asso(cid:272)iated (cid:449)ith the biological perspective in psychology. Neuron the specialized cell in the nervous system that receives and sends messages within the system. Contains the nucleus and keeps the entire cell alive and functioning. Fiber attached to the soma, carries messages out to the other cells. Responsible for communicating with other nerve cells. Fatty insulation that covers, protects and speeds the transmission of messages within the axon. Multiple sclerosis- immune system eats away the protective covering of nerves. Glial cells (oligodendtocytes and schwann cells) structure, hold neurons in place.
