Document Summary

Crural fascia: deep fascia that invest the leg. Muscles of the leg: the muscles of the leg are divided into three muscles groups by connective tissue septa, the three muscles groups of the leg are the anterior, lateral, and posterior crural (leg) muscles. The muscles of the anterior compartment of the leg: tibialis anterior, extensor digitorum longus, extensor hallucis longus, fibularis (peroneus) tertius. All the anterior crural muscles are innervated by the deep fibular(peroneal) nerve. Muscles of the lateral compartment of the leg: fibularis (peroneus) longus, fibularis (peroneus) brevis. The muscles of the posterior compartment of the leg are divided into two group by a fascial sheet: All the posterior crural muscles (i. e. superficial and deep) are innervated by the tibial nerve. The muscles of the posterior compartment of the leg, superficial group: gastrocnemius, soleus, plantaris. Note: collectively, the soleus and the two heads (i. e. medial and lateral) of the gastrocnemius compose the triceps surae.
