Document Summary

The abiotic environment is all of these non-living components (i. e. the habitat) E. g. amount of rain, soil/water chemistry, energy, temperature, etc. The distribution of large ecosystems (biomes) around the world gives and idea of the importance of abiotic factors in ecosystems e. g. where deserts, etc are depends on abiotic factors. An important abiotic factor determining the distribution of biomes is temperature. Warmer temperatures at the equator is due to the distribution of solar energy. However, latitude isn"t everything when it comes to temperature e. g. coastal areas of the east coast are generally warmer than the west coast. Water in general has a regulating effect on temperature > coasts/areas near large bodies of water tend to have much more mild winters and summers. Another important determiner of where biomes exist: rainfall. Patterns predictable due to warm air being able to hold more moisture than cold air. Paired with global temperature patterns, accounts for much of distribution of deserts around the world.
