Physical structures can help protect an organism from predation: camouflage. Cryptic coloration can enable an organism to blend into its surroundings and avoid predation: chemical defenses. Toxins can make an organism poisonous or unpalatable to a predator: warning coloration. Organisms that produce toxic chemicals frequently have bright color patterns, warning potential predators to stay away: mimicry. Pretending to be another (more dangerous) organism: energy and chemicals flow within ecosystems, producers. Uses an energy source to create chemical energy: 1st consumers. Eat other carnivores: energy flow, energy from the sun passes through an ecosystem in several steps known as trophic levels, losses at every step in food chain.
