BIOLOGY 1101 Lecture 6: Cells and Energy
Document Summary
Describe what a cell is and the two general types. Describe the two energy organelles (chloroplasts and mitochondria) Prokaryotic cell - does not have a nucleus; dna resides in middle of cell. Eukaryotic cell - has nucleus which holds dna. Plasma membrane - encloses cell contents: dna, ribosomes, and cytoplasm. Dna - one or more circular loops containing genetic information. Ribosomes - granular bodies in the cytoplasm that convert genetic information into protein structure. A cell wall is found in plant cells - protects and gives shape to the cell. Cytoplasm: fluid with a high content of h20 that fills the cell. Ribosomes: very small structures that are not membrane bound (not technically an organelle) Eukaryotic cells have a nucleaus and other organelles, prokaryotes do not. Larger than prokaryotes - usually at least 10x bigger. No nucleus - dna is in the cytoplasm. Every cell on earth is either a eukaryotic or a prokaryotic cell.
