Document Summary

Water is the only common substance to exist in the natural environment in all three physical states of matter. Polar covalent bonds in water molecules result in hydrogen bonding. Water is a polar molecule meaning that it"s overall charge is unevenly distributed: the hydrogen bonds form, break, and reform with great. Four emergent properties of water contribute to earth"s suitability for life frequency: cohesive behavior, ability to moderate temperature, expansion upon freezing, versatility as a solvent. At any given moment, many of the water molecules are linked by multiple hydrogen bonds, making water more structured than most other liquids: this phenomenon is called cohesion. Adhesion- the clinging of one substance to another. Surface tension- a measure of how difficult it is to stretch or break the surface of a liquid. Water moderates air temperature by absorbing heat from air that is warmer and releasing the stored heat to air that is cooler.
