The names of cycloalkanes follow iupac rules: alkane names are preceded by the preix cyclo- Disubsituted cycloalkanes can be stereoisomers: cis when subsituents are on the same face, trans when subsituents are on opposite faces, stereoisomers compounds that have idenical conneciviies but difer in the arrangement of their atoms in space. The properies of the cycloalkanes difer from those of their straight-chain analogs: cycloalkanes have higher boiling and meling points as well as higher densies. Due to increased london interacions of the relaively rigid and symmetric cycloalkanes. 4-2: ring strain and the structure of cycloalkanes. Ring strain when the bond angles in a cycloalkane difer signiicantly from the bond angles in a branched alkane. The heats of combusion of the cycloalkanes reveal the presence of ring strain: small rings cyclopropane, cyclobutane, common rings cyclopentane, cyclohexane, cycloheptane, medium rings 8-12 membered rings, large rings 13-membered and larger.
