It is a forested, glaciated island in lake superior. Isle royale is the largest island in lake superior. In northern michigan: only accessible by ferry, personal boat, or float-plane service, the park is open from april 15 through october. Only wildlife biologists are on the island in winter: visited by ~20,000 people each year, but based on wilderness land area, isle royale is the most densely used of all the national parks. It is the least visited park, but has the most repeat visitors. By july, 2017 isle royale had had 15,853 visitors, a 20% increase from the same period in 2016: known for primitive backcountry hiking and camping. Isle royale has 165 miles of trails and 36 campgrounds: there are no roads on the island. Isle royale is famous for studies of the predator-prey relationship between wolves and moose.
