EEOB 2520 Lecture Notes - Lecture 2: Channel Tunnel, Neurotransmitter, Lipophobicity
Document Summary
Intercellular communication-integral for function of the reflex template. Minimally we must have communication at the afferent and efferent pathways of the reflex template. Requires physical contact of the two cells. Like gap junctions but longer, wider channels. Ex. bigger and wider walkways such as the chunnel between england and france. Not communication between inside of one cell to the inside of another, but the proteins on the surface of the cells interacting with one another. Transient: we have these connections but then they"re gone; not a long-term connection. Still must have direct contact between the cells. Paracrine: a is communicating with b through a chemical messenger c. These signals can only go a short distance. Special case: autocrines - cells communicates with itself. From only gland or neuron (limited release) Special case: neurohormone - the subset of our endocrines that"s released by a neuron (ex: epinephrine that is released by our blood) Exam question: compare and contrast the three indirects.
