Patience hears about his suffering while penaunce, remorse, and reprentance cause him pain and then heals him. Charissa teaches redcrosse about virtue and they visit the hospital where the bead-men work. Then they visit contemplation, an old man who prays all day and night. He leads redcrosse to the top of the mountain, showing him hiersusalem, a city god created, so glorious that spenser cannot describe. If redcrosse comes back to see the path of holiness, he will be known as saint george, patron saint of england. Redcrosse was kidnapped as a child and raised in faerieland.
