Interspecies crosses (hybrids): result from the sexual reproduction of two plants/animals of different breeds, varieties, species or genera that would never mate in nature; bred since 1800s. Protoplast fusion: used to fuse plant cells, often using an electric field, to move beneficial traits from one species to another. Developed to select and transfer individual genes coding for specific desirable traits in plants rather than rely on scattershot techniques that can result in undesirable & desirable traits. The genes that code for a desirable trait, once identified in a donor organism, can be transferred artificially into a recipient organism. Recombinant dna techniques: tools to extract specific genes from dna and insert those. Makes it possible to insert genes extracted from a donor organism into a recipient organism in order that the subsequent offspring have the dna necessary to produce the desired trait originating from the donor.
