A new normal, many holocaust survivors committed suicide after the experiences they had. Some ended up living very normal lives: primo levi, 1919-1987 (suicide??, 1947; rejected by 6 publishers, major themes. Idea of being on the bottom: normal life being suspended, what you learn about yourself, what happens inhumanity becomes the norm. Loss of major support systems in concentration/death/work camps: other themes. Systems for everything: ex: when to get the most time in the bathroom. "here there is no why: perfect happiness/unhappiness. Survivors not saints, much of the time, also a diverse group. Levi strived for precision: avoids common sayings, phrases. Survival in auschwitz: levi"s purpose -> justification, suggestion conveyed in justification, anthropological -> what does this tell us about who we are, survival at all costs, therapeutic -> telling the store is a need, history. Italy, like hungary, a german ally that was invaded by the germans late in the war.
