Socialism, catholicism, nationalism, republicanism : convinced stalin that democracies would not stand up to hitler. Led to nazi-soviet non-aggression pact: testing military tactics and weapons for wwii, downtrodden proletariat and peasant. Mainly not industrialized, but there were some areas. Anarchists took over the unions, create tension. Kept in line by the guardia civil (good at keeping peace but pissed off working class) Exiled regular army because they feared a military coup: rise of revolutionary parties. Anarchists, revolutionary socialists, communists (stalinists with help from the man himself and trotskyites: role of the catholic church: Revered by conservatives and despises by revolutionaries: dysfunctional monarchy replaced by ineffective republic in 1931, general break down of public order.
