The origins of diplomacy: ancient origins- near east: tried to handle problems with negotiation of communication. Tablets have survived of the negotiations: during egyptian times, gifts were given to make agreements, had to dress, act, and address people in certain ways. Rebels escape to masada from the roman empire. Rebels commit suicide because they do not want to be captured by the romans: social diplomacy: every roman settlement has several things in common: a bath house, a hippodrome (horse chariot racing), and a coliseum. This was used for socialization: byzantine empire, they tried to impress other diplomats by using mechanical animals, medieval europe, catholic church: cannon law outlined international affairs, how the united states conducted diplomatic affairs was through inheritance!!! Everything they did was based on the policies and customs was from past civilizations. They learned from both the positive and negative elements of those diplomatic civilizations.
