Document Summary

Water comprises of 50-70% of the human body: every cell, tissue, and organ contains come water, essential for life. Water balance is controlled by electrolyte concentrations on either side of the cell membrane. Osmosis movement of water across the cell membrane from an area of low solute to an area of high solute. Many different solutes can be dissolved in water: water transports nutrients and wastes. Metabolism generates wastes which dissolve in water and are excreted as part of urine: water is a medium of chemical reactions. Water is resistant to temperature changes: takes much more energy to heat water than air, because majority of body is water, much energy is needed to charge body temperature. Evaporation of perspiration from the skin releases heat. Saliva, mucus, synovial fluid, spinal fluid, respiratory tract, urine, skin, and eyes. Adequate intake for total water: 11 cups for women, 15 cups for men.
