Fela kuti (1938-1997: from a prominent west-african family, grew up in yoruba area of what would be nigeria, received colonial-style education and then earned a music degree from trinity. College in london in 1958: returned to lagos and continued to play mix of highlife and jazz, 1969 travels to us where he meets black activists. This changes his political orientation and his sound. Black power movement and soul: 1970s returns to lagos and forms africa "70. Horn section riffs in support of fela"s singing, extended solos. Early recordings love songs and yoruba songs based on proverbs and tales. 1970s increasingly controversial lyrics attaching foreign capitalism and oppressive. Nigerian leaders: nigerian pidgin english-based pidgin and creole language; used as a main means of communication across a very linguistically diverse nigeria. Also, expressed widespread dismay at conditions in nigeria.
