Toxic mushrooms: mushrooms produce a wide variety of toxic compounds, some toxins act immediately, so have an extended latent phase (up to 3 days hours) Individuals vary in sensitivity to specific toxins: some people may have allergic reactions to otherwise harmless mushrooms, some people may not react to the actual mushrooms but the toxins from the area it was growing on. 7 groups: amanitin- produced by amanita phalloides (the death cap). Consists of 8 amino acids joined in a ring. If eaten first symptoms occur in 6-24 hours after eating (nausea, abdominal pain, vomiting) the pain is really your liver and kidney being destroyed. Insects aren"t effected when eaten though (watch out for large or dark annulus, or big bulb at the bottom: monomethylhydrazine- composed of the stuff that makes rocket fuel! May occur up to 5 days after eating mushrooms: muscarine- causes psl syndrome, may also dramatically reduce heart rate and blood pressure.
