POLITSC 1100 Lecture Notes - Lecture 12: Hubert Humphrey, George Mcgovern, Party System
Document Summary
1968 national democratic convention that led huge reform to how we nominate our presidents. Lyndon b. johnson didn"t wanna run again, so he kind of anointed hubert humphrey. When it came time for the convention, humphrey hadn"t taken part in a single primary. This is just the way things were back then. Johnson said if you don"t support the vietnam war, you won"t be the nominee. Lots of anti-war people showed up and ran a pig for president. These people threatened to put lsd in the city water supply. Chicago mayor didn"t grant any permits for anyone to sleep in the park or have a protest, so when the protests began anyway he sent the police go clear it out. Senator abraham ribico from connecticut is nominating george mcgovern. Daly (not sure who that is) is yelling profanity from the crowd.
